We invite you on an excursion to St. Isaac's Cathedral!
St. Isaac's Cathedral was created as the main cathedral of Russia. It was built for almost 40 years (1819-1858) according to the project of the talented French architect Auguste Montferrand with the help of modern technologies of that time. Each of the 48 columns of the side porticos weighs 114 tons and is one of the most gigantic in the world. The domes are covered with gilded copper sheets in the fire, this technology forms a gilding of exceptional strength. Since the construction of the temple, the domes have never been gilded again. St. Isaac's Cathedral is entirely lined with natural stone and decorated with a large number of sculptures. Today, the cathedral is one of the most popular places to visit.
On the colonnade of St. Isaac's Cathedral there is a viewing platform (43 meters high), from which a circular view opens to the historical center of St. Petersburg: the central square of the city, the Neva River and the main bridges across it.
In the basement of St. Isaac's Cathedral is an exhibition "To remember ...". During the Siege of Leningrad, exhibits from the palaces of Pushkin, Peterhof, Pavlovsk, Gatchina, which did not have time to evacuate to the rear, were stored in the basements. The exhibition is dedicated to the heroism of people who, in the most harsh living conditions, were able to preserve museum rarities for the next generation.
